FAQ

What are Mia Tsang's professional qualifications?

Our founder, Miss Mia, is a Registered Hong Kong Teacher holding a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. She earned her Master's degree in Teaching Chinese as an International Language and her Bachelor's degree in Chinese from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

She taught in local high schools for over 10 years, and some of her former students have already become high school Chinese teachers themselves. Her strong academic background and extensive teaching experience far exceed the industry average.

As an expat newly arrived in Hong Kong, should I learn Cantonese or Mandarin first?

It entirely depends on your lifestyle and career goals. If you wish to blend into the local community, chat effortlessly with local taxi drivers or restaurant staff, and build a local social network, Cantonese is your gateway. However, if your daily work involves frequent collaboration with Mainland clients and teams, or if you look at the broader Greater China market, Mandarin offers higher corporate utility. Many of our executive clients opt for our "Dual-Track Program" to master both simultaneously.

What are some effective ways to learn Cantonese or Mandarin quickly?

To learn Cantonese or Mandarin quickly, the secret lies in structured guidance + high-frequency real-world practice. While self-study methods like watching dramas, flashcard apps, or language exchanges can help, they often lack personalized feedback and logical progression — leading to slow progress and frustration.

Here's what really works — and what we build into every course:

  1. Master tones & pronunciation with a trained coach (critical for non-tonal language speakers)

  2. Scenario-based drills — ordering food, handling client calls, or delivering a pitch — so you use what you learn immediately

  3. Immersive input + spaced repetition systems to lock vocabulary into long-term memory

Is Cantonese or Mandarin harder to learn?

For Westerners, Cantonese pronunciation and listening are more challenging at the beginning due to its 6 tones and the gap between spoken and written forms. Mandarin, with its standardized grammar and only 4 tones, is relatively easier to start with.
However, Miss Mia's unique teaching methodology deconstructs both languages into simple, actionable formulas. As long as you master the correct Romanization and pronunciation patterns, you can easily break through the bottlenecks in a short period of time.
(Cantonese is widely described as having 6 contrastive tones (or 9 tonal categories when including "checked" syllables ending in \(-p\), \(-t\), or \(-k\)).

How many lesson hours does a complete beginner need to learn Cantonese or Mandarin for daily conversation?

In just 30 hours of our systematic course, you'll master daily listening and speaking — from self-introductions, shopping, and ordering food, to talking about weather, making phone calls, taking transport, and seeing a doctor etc. You'll confidently hold everyday conversations with Hong Kongers or mainland Chinese people. Beyond our complete, structured materials, Mia excels at pinpointing your pronunciation weak spots and drilling them until your accent fades — clearing the way for real communication.

Do I need to learn how to write Chinese characters while learning to speak Cantonese or Mandarin?

In the beginner stage, absolutely not.
For busy corporate executives and expats, our curriculum follows a "Speaking and Listening First" principle. The initial phase focuses 100% on Romanization (Jyutping/Pinyin) and oral expressions to get you talking immediately. Once you have built a strong verbal foundation, you can choose to add character reading and writing based on your professional needs, which drastically reduces cognitive overload.

Should I learn Traditional or Simplified Chinese characters?

It depends entirely on your core target market. If your life and business are 100% rooted in Hong Kong or Taiwan, Traditional characters help you integrate into local culture, read street signs, and understand local official documents. If your investments, clients, or corporate headquarters are in Mainland China, or if you are preparing for the HSK exam, Simplified characters offer better utility. We provide dedicated materials for both tracks to match your needs.

Does Cantonese actually have 9 tones or 6 tones?

Strictly speaking, Cantonese only has 6 independent musical pitches (6 tones). The term "9 tones" comes from traditional phonology because 3 of these tones sound short and clipped when words end with the consonants 'p', 't', or 'k' (known as entering tones). For foreign learners, you only need to master the 6 core pitches to pronounce Cantonese flawlessly.

How does Mia help me master the complex Cantonese tones?

Mia compares the six tones of Cantonese to musical notes. By transforming abstract tones into visual charts and musical rhythms — along with precise pronunciation correction and catchy tone mnemonics — foreign learners can intuitively grasp the secrets of accurate pronunciation in their very first lesson.

What is the hardest part of learning Cantonese?

The hardest part is usually not the grammar — it's the gap between spoken Cantonese and written vernacular Chinese, along with the wide range of Cantonese idioms and modal particles. Mia focuses on teaching the most practical, authentic, and situationally appropriate spoken expressions for everyday life and the workplace — so your Cantonese sounds just like a local speaker!
